Items for Success in First Grade

Reading/Writing..............

  •  Some things you can do to help your child gain more confidence in reading and writing is to spend time reading every night.
  • Encourage your child to read all the print around them.
  •  Also, spend time writing at least twice a week.
  • Use our spelling and vocabulary words in sentences.
  • Include capitals, punctuation marks, correct letter size, and spacing.
  • Make sure your child understands that they should be able to apply their spelling and vocabulary words to their reading and writing.

Spelling

  •          Review the spelling words we have already tested them on to see if he/she can still spell them.
  •           Find the pattern in the current spelling list.  See if he/she can spell a word that is not on the list, but follows the same pattern.
  •           i.e.  If a week has short e words, make sure they can spell all the words on the list.  But then add net and ten, and see if they can spell them.  If he/she understands the pattern we are working on, they should be able to spell similar words.  We will be adding two words to our spelling test each week that were not on the list to check their understanding.

 Math

  •         Please work on math flash cards for addition and subtraction.  We are starting on this important concept that your child will need to be successful for the rest of his/her math skill!s
  •        Please make sure you go aver your child’s homework and concepts we are working on in class.  Some of our concepts are very difficult, but with practice and hard work we will be on our way to becoming incredible mathematicians!
  • Always work with your child on their math vocabulary bags and math flash cards to help reinforce their understanding.  We will be working to master math facts, patterns, time, money, graphing and many more topics this year!!

The following are a few of my favorite web sites you and your child can work together on to reinforce and promote our first grade skills.

  1. internet4classrooms.com
  2. AAAmath.com
  3. starfall.com
  4. pbskids.org
  5. kidport.com
  6. Apples 4 teachers
  7. math games
  8. first grade activities
  9. Getting Students Connected
  10. Smartie Zone
