General Information

Our Daily Schedule is attached.

Homework: It is very important to go through your child's backpack every day to check for homework or notes to you.  Please return all homework and or notes sent home the following day.  Homework Folder is sent home daily with papers in appropriate pockets.  A schedule of weekly homework will be sent home on Mondays in the weekly note.

  •  Weekly Folder: Good communication among parents and the school is one of our goals at Central School.  A white Central School envelope will be sent home with your child every Friday with any and all important notes and newsletters.  Please sign the envelope and return it the following Monday.  This lets us know you have received it and have read the notes.  If the envelope is lost you can purchase another one for $0.25.

Report Cards:  We do not have letter grades in First Grade.  The report card will accurately tell you where your child is functioning socially and academically.  It will tell whether your child is above average, at grade level or below level in all academic areas.  We will have parent-teacher conferences in October for all students.  In March we will have Parent-Teacher conferences for those students at risk.

Math:  There will be math homework usually Monday through Friday unless there is a test. Also, please have your child practice and memorize the math facts that will come home each Wednesday night.   Sign the Paper and return the math facts in the bag each Thursday.

Reading:  A new story, vocabulary words and phonics words are introduced each week. The words will be sent home every Monday.  Please have your child practice reading them to you.

o    Every Tuesday night your child will be bringing home his/her reading and phonics word bag to practice.  Like the math fact bag, please spend time going over the words, try using the words in sentences, and even try writing sentences with the vocabulary words and phonics words.  Return the word bag with the paper signed on Wednesday.

o    In addition, the reading book will be sent home on Thursday evening so your child can practice reading the story we are working on that week.  Please sign the reading list and send the list and the book back to school on Friday.

  •   Please read to your child daily and encourage him/her to read to you as much as possible.

RtI:  If your child is struggling in reading he/she may be chosen to receive extra intensive reading instruction during the school day from reading specialist Carol Davison or RtI coordinator .  You will be notified if your child qualifies for this program.

Scholastic Reading Counts (SRC):  As soon as your child is ready to read a library book on his/her own, we will start him/her in our SRC Program.  Your child will bring a book home according to his/her reading level.

o    Have your child read the book and then ask him/her questions about the story.  When you feel your child is ready for a test, send the book to school and your child will take a test on the computer.  When your child passes the test, he/she will check out a new book.  If he/she does not pass the test we will send the book home to be read again.  This is a very beneficial program for your child!  We have seen tremendous growth in reading from those students who participate regularly in this program.  It supplements and accelerates our First grade reading curriculum.

Librarian:  Our librarian is Mrs. Donna Clayton.  She helps with our wonderful reading program by letting our students check out books daily.  Her extension is #108.

Spelling Tests:  On Monday of each week, new spelling words will be sent home that go along with each of our reading stories.  Please have your child practice writing these words daily.  The spelling test is given every Friday morning.

Breakfast:  It will be served from 7:25 to 7:45.  Cost will be $0.75 which will include milk.

Lunch:  Daily lunch cost is $1.75 and extra milk is $0.50.  You may put money in the blue envelopes which are sent home or pay in the cafeteria to have money on your child’s account.  Children who bring their lunch may also buy milk for $0.50.

Mornings:  Students should not arrive any earlier than 7:30 a.m.  (unless they attend Latchkey or ride the bus).  When your child arrives at school, he/she should go to his/her locker to put away his/her backpack.  Then your child will either go to eat breakfast or play on the playground.  The children will be coming in from the playground at 7:50 a.m. on good weather days.  On bad weather days, the students should report to the cafeteria.  Your child will be counted tardy if he/she arrives in the classroom after 7:50 a.m.  If your child arrives at school after 9:00 they will be counted as a ½ day absent.

o    If your child is going to be absent, please call the school office by 9:30.  Also, parents must sign their child in at the office when tardy.

Afternoons:  If you pick up your child from school, please wait by the parent waiting area by the gym.  A bell will ring after all bus riders have boarded the bus this will be approximately 2:40.  Your child will be brought to you in the waiting area by the gym.

o    PLEASE write a note if there is going to be a change in transportation.  If we do not receive a note or a phone call, we MUST follow the normal routine.  If you are picking your child up early from school, you must sign them out in the office.  You must also sign your child in when returning to school after an appointment.

PTO:  Please join and become involved!  They do a great deal of wonderful things for our school and we have tons of fun!  Cost to join is only $2.00 per family.

Discipline Plan

Our first grade classes will use positive reinforcement from our new PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) program.  This will include teaching our students the behaviors we expect from them and re-teaching the desirable behavior when a behavior is not an acceptable one.  Research shows us that positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to not only change problematic behavior, but also to encourage and maintain appropriate behavior.

Your child’s behavior will be recorded daily in the student planner to help communicate his or her behavior choices for the day.

1.    Daily: If your child breaks a rule or an inappropriate behavior is shown, a verbal warning is given.  The student then loses 5 minutes of lunch recess or 5 minutes of afternoon recess.

2.    The second time a rule is broken; the student will be redirected and reminded what behaviors are expected of him/her.  The student loses 10 minutes of recess.

3.    The third time a rule is broken; the student will again be redirected and reminded what behaviors are expected of him/her.  The student loses 15 minutes of recess.

a.    For excessive misbehaviors, the student loses recess, and his/her parents are contacted by a note or a phone call.

4.    For extreme misbehaviors, the student will receive a Discipline Referral and will be sent to the office to see the Principal, Ms. Dawn Elser.

Tiger Tickets

Throughout every day in our classroom you child will receive a great deal of verbal praise, stickers, smiles and treats for good behavior and work.  Your child can receive Tiger Tickets from any staff member who catches your child demonstrating positive behavior choices.  Each month these tickets can be redeemed for prizes at our ROAR Store.

Each quarter our school has a ROAR Night for the families of the children who have been fight free for that quarter.
