Description of Program
The Central School Mentor Program is designed to provide children with an opportunity to develop a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult from the community. Mentors are volunteers from the community that are willing and able to spend one hour a week, during school hours, meeting with a youth.
Students are often referred to the mentor program because of the benefits of developing a relationship with an adult in the community.
Benefits of Youth Mentoring
Intuitively we know youth mentoring is good for young people. However, many studies have provided evidence that youth mentoring has many positive outcomes for young people, adults and their communities.
According to the National Mentoring Partnership, youth mentoring helps produce benefits such as:
• young people tend to stay in school
• young people tend to get better grades
• young people improve their self-esteem
• young people are less likely to start using drugs or alcohol
• young people learn to get along better with others
Meetings
The meetings take place on school grounds only between 7:50 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. During the meetings, mentors and students may do class work, play games, read books, work on special projects, talk, etc. Please keep in mind that I will only schedule students to meet with their mentors during a time in which they will not miss out on valuable learning.
Recruitment Efforts
We have many students who would benefit from having a mentor. We currently do not have enough Mentors to meet the demand. Please consider being a mentor, it will be well worth your time! If interested please call.
