Elementary School Students Show Veterans their Thanks

by Jennifer Ferguson

November 14, 2009

The gymnasium at Central Elementary School glowed with red, white, blue and camouflage as veterans, young and old, sat among the audience of elementary school children. Fifth grade student, Vanessa, approached the microphone, hushing the crowd, and began to read her winning essay on why soldiers serve their country. “Some said they like to do it because they like to meet and work with all the different people of the world, while others want to make sure our country stays safe,” she explained. “But no matter what their reason for serving their country is, they all like what they do…and I want to thank all veterans that have served and the veterans that are serving today,” Vanessa continued.

Those in attendance for the Veteran’s Day Assembly, held on Nov. 10th, got a good understanding of Central students’ appreciation for their veterans. Members of the O’Fallon Township High School presented the flag while the 4th and 5th grade chorus sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Boy Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lieutenant Colonel Brunner, a nurse practitioner for the United States Air Force spoke to the students on the importance of honoring and remembering those who have served their country.

Students also participated in a special presentation of submitting the names of family members who were members of the armed forces. Over 400 names were submitted and displayed.
