Kindedrgarten information packet

September 05, 2009

Dear Kindergarten family members:

Welcome to Central School!  We are pleased you have chosen our school and are looking forward to the exciting and stimulating year ahead.  The following is general information your family will need to feel at ease with your child’s transition into Kindergarten and Central School.  We cannot stress enough how important it is to read through this information thoroughly.

 Morning Routine: Students should arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 a.m., unless they attend Latchkey, eat breakfast at school, or ride the bus. The drop off area for car riders is  Door #5. (near the gym)  Please allow your child to independently complete all morning jobs (i.e. come in, put backpack in cubbies, and go to either the playground or cafeteria). There will be staff available to assist your child in completing this routine, if necessary. The students will be brought to the classroom upon the sounding of the 7:50 a.m. bell.  Your child will be counted tardy if he or she arrives in the classroom after 7:55 a.m.  A half-day absence is noted if your child arrives at school after 9:12 a.m. (approximate time).  Please call the school office if your child will not be coming to school.  In addition, parents must sign in their child at the office when arriving late or returning from an appointment.

 Afternoon Routine:  If you pick up your child from school, please wait to come into the school until all bus riders have boarded the bus, which will be approximately 2:40 p.m.  At this time, families will be allowed in the gym to pick up student.  You will need to wait inside the gym entrance until the 2:40 p.m. bell.  Do not wait outside the classroom doors!  Any change to the normal pickup procedure needs to be written in a note placed in your child’s folder.  If we do not receive a note, we must follow your child’s normal routine.  If you are picking up your child early, you must sign him or her out in the office.

 Breakfast: Breakfast will begin being served on the first full day of school.  Breakfast is served from approximately 7:20 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.  If your child is to eat breakfast, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to allow enough time to eat.  The cost will be $0.75, which includes milk.

 Lunch:  Lunch will begin being served on the first full day of school.  Our class will eat lunch at 11:05 a.m. Daily lunch cost is $1.75, which includes milk.  Children who bring their lunch may buy milk for $0.30.  It is strongly advised that you bank money into a breakfast and/or lunch account through the school cafeteria rather than sending in money every day. Please put all breakfast/lunch money in the blue envelopes that are provided.  Please contact Mrs. Porter at extension 175 for more information.  Parents are welcome to eat breakfast and/or lunch with their child at any time.  You will need to sign in at the office and proceed to the cafeteria (not the classroom) to wait for your child.

 Library:  Once a week, each Kindergarten class will visit the school library, at which time they will engage in story time and pick out 2  books to bring home.  These books can be counted for the Pizza Hut Book-It Club, which will begin later this fall.  Books are due back on the next library day.  Your child will not be able to check out a new book until the previous book is returned.  Book fines are a penny for each day past the due date.  If a book is lost or damaged, your family is responsible for the replacement cost.  Mrs. Clayton will contact you with the amount due. Library will not start for a few weeks due to construction.

 Latchkey:  The school provides a before and after school program.  The before school program runs from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., while the after school program runs from 2:40 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Please contact the school office for more information and/or to enroll your child.

 Fight-Free School: Central has adopted the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system of social and behavioral expectations for all students.  Please read and sign the attached papers concerning this school-wide program.

 Grading Scale: Although your child will not receive A’s and B’s in Kindergarten, we would like for you to know how your child is doing in his/her class work.  We will be using stars, smiley faces, and stickers on their papers.  Any items on their papers that have been marked were items that your child had difficulty with.  Please go over the circled items each night to reinforce these skills.

 Report Cards/Conferences:  Report cards will go home four times during the year.  Parent conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 10.  Specific dates and time for each parent conference will be sent home with your child.

 Daily Folder/Homework: It is very important to go through your child’s book bag and daily folder each night to check for homework and/or notes home.  Please return items found in the right side of the folder and keep items in the left side of the folder at home.  The daily folder also includes your child’s daily behavior charts, which need to be signed each night.  Please clean out the left side of your child’s folder every night.  In addition to homework that may be found in the folder, your child will keep the Phonics and Phonemic Awareness Practice Book at home. This practice book will be sent home with the first assignment. Homework assignments for the upcoming week will be on the weekly newsletter that goes home each Friday.

 Daily Discipline Chart: In the information folder, you will find a copy of the Kindergarten Discipline chart.  We are hoping that this chart will increase the communication between our school and our parents.  We are also hoping that this chart will decrease the number of off task behaviors and have a positive effect on the classroom environment.  It is extremely important that you sign and return this behavior folder EVERY day.  Daily communication is essential if we are to work together.  If your child’s chart is not signed, we will assume YOU did not see the chart.  If your child’s chart is not marked on for a given day, that means your child had a GREAT day, however your signature is still needed.  We feel it is just as important for you to know your child demonstrated excellent behavior choices.  Please keep all discipline charts in your child’s folder so we will be able to keep accurate records throughout the school year.

 Central School Friday Folders: Every Friday, a white envelope will be sent home in your child’s book bag.  This envelope will contain your child’s daily folder, weekly newsletter, and any other office notes that need your attention.  These folders are very important in helping our school communicate with families.  Please empty the envelope, read each item, sign the front, and return on Monday.

 Parent Volunteers: If you or another family member are interested in volunteering as field trip chaperones or helpers at school events, each volunteer must complete and return the Central School District 104 Volunteer form.  Two copies of this form are in your information folder, and if you need additional copies, please contact the classroom teacher.  The form is valid through this school year only.  Field trip permission slips will go home prior to each field trip with more details.

 Positive Reinforcements: Throughout every day in our classroom your child will receive a great deal of verbal praise, stickers, smiles, and treats for good behavior and work.  In addition, Tiger Tickets can be earned if a student demonstrates positive behavior and acts of kindness throughout the day.  Tiger Tickets can be turned in for a reward from the treat box and used to purchase items from the ROAR store.

 Daily Schedule: We will be going to either Music, Art, or Computers every day and PE every other day.  Due to the school construction, these specials will begin in approximately two weeks. In addition, those first two weeks will be used to teach classroom and school routines in place of academics.

 RTI- Response to Intervention Web Norming:  This testing will be done three times each year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) and focuses on the following areas:  phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.  After each assessment, parents will be informed of their child’s scores.  These scores will determine if additional reading assistance is necessary.  This assistance will be provided by the reading specialists.  Our specialists are Carol Davison, Kara Yung, Nancy Baim.

 Birthdays:  Birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom by each teacher.  Students who are celebrating a birthday will receive a special gift from the class and teacher.  If your child is having a birthday party, we will distribute the invitations in the student’s daily folder. Students may not bring birthday treats to school. (Refer to attached birthday treat policy)

 Star Student: Each week I will have a star student. This means that this student will bring in pictures and items to show to the class throughout the week.  This helps students get to know each other.  This will start after the first couple of weeks of school.  A detailed information sheet will follow when it is your child’s turn.

 Show and Tell: On Thursdays a large coffee can might be sent home with your child. Each student will get a turn or two. Please have your child pick an item or items that fit in the coffee can to show and tell to the class. The items are a “secret” so have your child practice some clues to give to the students and the students have to try and figure out what it is.

 Take home activity: On Fridays students will take turns taking home a writing activity in a backpack. This activity includes a bear and a notebook. The student is to take the bear wherever they go over the weekend. Then at the end of the weekend you and/or your child can write about the adventures the bear had. Then return all items on the following Monday to share with the class.

Dear Family,

As further clarification of our birthday treat policy, please do not send in any food or drink items that need to be served during the school day due to short lunch periods and time constraints in the classroom.  You may send in treat bags for EVERY student; however, this is certainly not mandatory.  We will pass the treat bags out at the end of the day to enjoy at home.  In addition, the birthday child will receive something special from the class and/or teacher.

We are hopeful that each family will respect this Kindergarten birthday treat policy and follow it accordingly.  Please sign and date the bottom of this letter and return it as soon as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Mrs. Rafferty Miss Barnes Mrs. Mueller
